Multiple fire crews were dispatched to Zeigler on Thursday evening as a raging fire consumed several structures in the area. The incident took place on Maple Street and initially drew the response of two engine trucks, the fire chief, and assistance from Royalton.
As the intensity of the fire grew, additional crews were called to the scene. In total, five homes were severely damaged, with three of them considered a complete loss. The remaining two homes sustained fire damage due to their close proximity to the other houses on fire.
The scale of the blaze was alarming, as it threatened to engulf the entire block. Zeigler Police Chief Ben Burkhamer expressed his concern, remarking on how the fire had nearly impacted the entire neighborhood.
Sadly, two of the homes that were completely destroyed had already been abandoned. The fire also led to one firefighter sustaining injuries, although prompt on-site medical attention was given to them.
